Holiday and Charity
Holiday-- This is an interesting prompt. We have so many different holiday's now, and more and more it seems like they are mainly centered around shopping for some reason. And also spending time with family (but while you shop). Every little day that we celebrate has some sort of special sale to go along with it. I wonder why that is? Anyways, that's a total tangent and has nothing to actually do with Christmas.
Holidays are great, and especially Christmas because its such a long Holiday season compared to most. In my mind at least, the 'holiday season' that is coming up is focused around Christmas and New Years, and both strike me as times of sort of 'new beginnings' in their own way. To me, the holiday season surrounding these two days is a great help in preparing to face the new year, partly because of the time off from work and school or whatever it may be, and the opportunity to spend time with people and get refreshed, and also because it just helps me to end the year in a good mood. With Christmas being so centered around peace, joy, hope etc. it really helps to focus me on those things going into January and the new year.
I know not everyone views the holiday season the way I do, and not everyone is lucky enough to have wonderful friends and family who make it so enjoyable, and that makes me sad sometimes. I don't know what I would do without being able to enjoy this time of year as much as I do.
Charity-- This prompt is interesting as well. What is it about Christmas time that makes people suddenly willing to be charitable when they never would be the rest of the year? I think a lot of it comes down to the fact that, for more than any other group really, Christmas is a particularly special time for kids, and people don't like to think about kids being sad. That seems really simplified but I think alot of charity during this time of year boils down to that. To kids, Christmas is a time for miracles to happen and for wished to come true, and I think that people want to feel like they've played a part in making that true for some child somewhere who wouldn't have had as good of a Christmas if it wasn't for them.
I feel really cynical now, like I just sucked all the joy out of the Christmas spirit of giving. Because really, giving is better then receivnig. For whatever reason there is just something great about knowing that you made someone else happy, and maybe that is one of the things that makes Christmas such a special holiday, because there is that element of not only getting stuff but also having the chance to brighten other peoples lives as well.
