Silver Bells

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks
Dressed in holiday style
In the air
There's a feeling of Christmas
Children laughing
People passing
Meeting smile after smile
And on every street corner you'll hear

Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas day

Strings of streetlights
Even stop lights
Blink a bright red and green
As the shoppers rush home
With their treasures
Hear the snow crunch
See the kids bunch
This is Santa's big scene
And above all the bustle
You'll hear

Silver bells, silver bells
Soon it will be Christmas day
Soon it will be Christmas day

Well I've already been laughed at for choosing the Chipmunk's version of this song.  But stick with me and I'll explain why (and just be happy its not the Chipmunk Christmas song).  The Chipmunk's Christmas album was one that my brothers enjoyed when we were younger, and I think the tape just about got warn out from all the listening.  I'll admit that quite a few of the songs drove me nuts, especially since it always seemed to be on.  But none the less, I remember it as parts of my childhood Christmas's and I have to smile every time I hear one of the songs.  It was on this album that I first remember hearing the song Silver Bells, and it was the one song I didn't mind listening to over and over again.  Even now, if I want to listen to Silver Bells, I choose the Chipmunk version.

I like Silver Bells because I like everything that the song talks about.  The people out shopping, and all the lights and decorations, everything that makes the Christmas season and builds my anticipation for the day itself.  To me, its a constant reminder that this time is special.  No other holiday has a month of preparation leading up to it like Christmas.  Each decorated house, holiday advertisement, and nativity scene is a reminder that we are celebrating something special unlike any other time of the year.  And while sometimes it seems like the Christmas season may go on to long, the decorations and songs can really just serve as a constant, daily reminder of our Savior's birth.  We should take advantage of these reminders, and instead of celebrating the season for a month, celebrate the Savior.
